Truth or Conspiracy?

30 06 2008

Altantunya murder is yet to be solved and now unfolds another episode of Anwar’s life at stake?  Are the top officials really involved?  Are the elite UMNO guys that powerful to plot all those sinful acts?  Or are they just another dirty political tactics by the Opposition (or Anwar) themselves?  Is there really a darker side of Malaysia?

Anwar said yesterday:  ‘I received information from credible sources within the government and military intelligence that they were agents within BN leadership were plotting to harm me, my family and supporters’.  This is no joke man!  Why would BN want to do such a thing?  It may not be Pak Lah but who is so foolish then?  Do we really believe that Anwar could be harmed and killed in Malaysia?  He is always a shrewd person, could it be that knowing his ’sodo-mi’ kaki has reported against him and his inability to topple the government, whatever happened yesterday was a conspiracy by Anwar himself?  Why must he hide?  He always claim to be a fighter, why chickens out?  Why not face the public and press?  Come on…he can always ask for protection from the police or his supporters (after all Selangor is under them).  Malaysia is not a cow-boy country!

this is the alleged Anwar’s recent ’sodo-mi’ kaki, at least better looking than Na@*%…

Met a friend in the lift just now, his response to Anwar’s saga was: ‘a leopard will never changes its spots’.  ‘He loves to eat sodo-mi, that is indisputable’.  Betul ke ni?  His DNA was proven from the semen on the mattress during the last trial, that is not disputed!

Let us look into the picture in an ordinary person’s perspective; Wan Azizah released several photos of Saiful (the above) taking with the BN leaders and DPM assistant.  The question is how come she is in possession of all the photos?  Great homework indeed, preplan.  In addition, knowing that Saiful may of a suspicious enemy, why did Anwar continues to use him as special assistant?  One of the alleged sodomy was reported to occur at Saiful’s condominium in Damansara Heights.  Can a 23 year-old assistant afford to rent such a place that cost about 3K-4K (or to buy at a market value of RM2 million)?  Anwar’s residence is about 2km from the condominium.  It is now under massive renovation and Anwar is temporarily residing at Segambut Heights.  Why would BN wants to use the same plot, knowing the repercussion would destroys the party and its leaders?  I have anticipated that Anwar is bound to come up with all kinds of dramatic event and excuses when he realises the chance of toppling the government is fading, check out my previous postings over the last 2 months.  Think about it…

Whatever these people intend to do, I hope they will not jeopardise the nation, may we always live in peace and harmony…

By the way, Fernando Torres of Spain was the man to win the EURO 08!

Mi-Goreng? Mi-Rebus? Maggie-Mi? atau Sodo-Mi?

29 06 2008

  “Hmmm, aye janganlah:), reeeformasi…”

Anwar release a statement from his hiding place in the Turkish embassy just now:  “The allegations that have been made against me on Saturday are nothing more than a replay of the events which transpired in 1998 when I was sacked from the office of the deputy prime minister, jailed and beaten, and then charged and convicted by a kangaroo court for crimes which I never committed.”  (Apa ni, Mugabe’s foe went hiding in the embassy, dia pun ikut…)

Here we go again, several friends including my mum have been asking about the highlight of today’s news in relation to AI.  A man who is full of dramas and suspense!  Whether did he sodomises his aide or receives any death threat, more mud-slinging would emerge as the date approaches by which Anwar said he would seize power.  As we head towards September 16, Anwar’s own deadline on when he will topple the government, more and more political things will be coming out of the closet, from both sides.  This is the game!

To put it simply, the way I look at it, there are several probabilities of such interesting issues of the day.  It could be a conspiracy as defended by AI to discredit and undermine his forces of take-over reality OR AI himself sets up the whole episode, fearing  that he is unable to achieve what he said by 16 Sept, so to switch the blame in order to gain a valid excuse (mala fide).  What about the death threat?  The mere fact that he lets the whole world know he is hiding in the embassy, what is he trying to convey?

What if the police indeed discover that the DNA of the sperm suits AI?   Then he would be arrested, then the PKR gang will go to the street again, then…It is also probable that these sorts of events are designed to distract the population from real issues such as the slowdown in the economy and the rising fuel prices.  Let us not mislead by the press or the opposition website but to analyse more of such ’sodo-mi’ business in days to come, have fun…

By the way, where are his alliance buddies (Kit Siang, Hadi) of Pakatan Rakyat, sunyi saja?  Whatever it is, I respect AI’s international recognition as BBC, CNN, Channelnewsasia carry the news of the same today.

30/6 – 1.30am:  Current poll results in US:  Obama 45%, McCain 40%, Undecided 15%; still a long way though…as for now I’ll enjoy the final of the EURO ‘08 Germany to win?

Social Contract Forum

28 06 2008

Together with Keh Ho and Alan, we woke up early today to attend a forum organised by the Bar Council to grasp the burning issue of social contract or to be more specific ‘Ketuanan Melayu’.  The invited impassioned, controversial and courages speakers were political scientist and human rights activists: Dr.Kua Kia Soong, Dr. M Puthucheary, Dr. Faris Noor and constitutional lawyer Tommy Thomas.   Now I know how Faris looks like as I did enjoyed reading some of his books (including Kua’s).

First and central to the discourse is that many Malays cling to a highly romanticised ideal of their special position in society.  ‘Ketuanan Melayu’ is a social contruct brought up time and again in public discussion on inter-ethnic relationship.  Faris descirbed everyhting as ‘artificial’.  Kua and Tommy had also clearly relate the need of historical understanding in order to have a clear picture of such notion today.  Believed to be the exchange of citizenship for special rights so-called agreement is considered by some to be enshrined in the law (esp Dr. M recently).  Tommy is convinced that all the negative perceptions were due to political motives, thus it is the leadership that requires change.  To sum it up, what these speakers said was, above all, timely.  There is rich irony in their detailed account of the changing cultural status and political racism.  The speakers perpective was inclusive, not divisive and certainly not polarizing.  We left during the Q&A as surprisingly the questioners were full of sh*ts.  To me as it has always been, nobody dare to say governing Malaysia was and is an easy task.  But when we look back at our past, and consider all the opportunities that we as a nation have to realise that  our greatness lies not the KLCC (as per Farid) but in the diversity of the people.  It was never an issue thus it should not be one in the future.

p/s:  any idea about Pekida and Tiga Line gang?  Groups that I heard about it recently…

PM: “Stay United to Overcome Challenges”?

28 06 2008

In yesterday’s the Star, PM urged we Malaysians to stay united in dealing with the challenging economic times…However, the way I look at it is the PM’s call for the people to tighten our belts without demanding fundamental reform and restructuring of the economic system is fatally flawed.  Those ‘extra funds’ for development (9MP) may not consider as what he described  ‘to ensure the economic fundamentals remained strong’.  A country’s economic fundamentals encapsulate more than sound economic policy.  They demand transparent procedures, an accountable political system and a free flow of information.  Instead of pandering to colourful rhetoric, the PM should ensure that unity from the heart or a policy of such should be implemented.

In every economic downturn the victims who must bear the brunt of the crisis are retrenched workers and the poorer/middleclasses (like me?) who will have to suffer the effects of inflation and the tight market.  This is the time for a responsible government not to let us down by making cutbacks in essential public services but for more public spending on job creation, retraining, restructuring, and cushioning the effects of inflation.  Whether the 6 strategies would improve the quality of our life or not, I hope those policy which has been supporting crony businessmen or encourage corruption must be eliminated, otherwise the crisis will get worse.

Gua respect sama lu, Yang Arif Datuk Ian Chin!

26 06 2008

I wonder how many judges are as bold as him!  Maybe politicians can also learn something from here.  The following are some of the verbatim words of Justice Ian in one of his recent notes of proceedings:

“In view of what I have said, this prime minister can use that piece of paper and go fly kite with it in the park, taking with him his lap dogs (the one who said I am in breach of the code of ethic and the other who said I should be sacked) so that they can chase after the birds while he flies the kite.

I have also at time entertained the idea that Dr. Mahathir must have a file on my then Chief Justice and he had employed the STASI tactic to do what he wanted the Chief Justice to do, including giving the order to my brother judge to dismiss the election petition which I have in the earlier sitting mentioned. Could it be possible that Dr. Mahathir had used his lawyer friend, to take them to holidays and taking photographs of those events, to set them up for Dr. Mahathir to later threaten them with corruption charges in order to get them to do his biddings? Very probable, in view of what I have revealed.

The public should know that a judge cannot reply to all sorts of allegations except where it is relevant like in the present case and only during the court proceedings. Otherwise he just take the punches with his hands tied and mouth plastered. But when you hear such allegations say from this prime minister or his lap dogs you should bear in mind:

(1) To some politicians, the ends justify the means and employing lies is their second nature; and

(2) If someone is shown to have lied unashamedly, then he revealed his propensity to lie;

Since I do not want promotion before, now or in the future nor any appointment after my retirement, what do I get out of all this knowing very well that I will be the target for vilification? It is this. I must be able to sleep well after I retired knowing that I have done all I can, like all the crucified judges before me, to tell Malaysians the danger they are in regarding the state of the judiciary. On final word, Dr. Mahathir for what he had done and for what he is trying to do is a devil incarnate but to those who had suffered under his hands, even that description my be rather complimentary.”

FROM ME:  CHEERS!

Justice Datuk Ian H.C. Chin

Buka pintu! Kamu ditahan kerana judi!

26 06 2008

Well, I did stayed up to watch the semi-final between Germany vs Turkey, and unsuprisingly many around the world did the same.  To keep awake I started skyping with few friends, an online communication method which is very new to me.  This morning as I struggled to wake up due to a phone call, a client requested my help to bail out his friends who were locked up at the Puchong station.  Why?  They were playing poker while waiting for the EURO live telecast.

A senior police officer on being satisfied upon written information and after any enquiry which he may think necessary that there is good reason to believe that the place is used for gambling, may warrant and authorise any police officer to enter and search such a place and all persons found therein.  It is important to note that not all types of gambling in Malaysia are illegal.  Depending on the circumstances in which the game is played and whether it is carried on in a public place or a common gaming house before one can be charged for illegal gambling.  The prosecution needs to prove both the above criterias, otherwise no case.  Since gambling is a non-seizable offence, my clients were granted bail and they went back excitedly looking forward to the other semi-final between Russia vs Spain.  Life goes on…

Grass roots?

24 06 2008

This afternoon while waiting at the corridor of the Court complex, I was dazing at a dying plant.  The word ‘grassroot’ springs into my mind.  ‘Akar umbi’?  Soil below the surface?

Several years ago, when I first met some active politicians, this word seems to be used in common among them.  At that time such word remains ambiguous to me especially to term it politically.  Politicians often presented themselves as getting down to grass roots.  They also talked about themselves and the measures they favoured, having support from the grass roots, that is, from their constituents – ordinary people, the salt of the earth.  Today, I understand that the basic requirements of a grass root leader include certain exposure and experience of hosting meetings, talking with the locals, gathering signatures for petitions, raising money, organising demonsrations/protests, asking individual opinions, getting involved in their surrounding problems, taking part in the election campaign of that particular constituent etc.

The truth is how many of them are truly grass roots leaders?  Faking a grass roots movement is known as astroturfing, the name clearly spells out as artificial grass.  Hmm…, are there more grass roots or astroturf or rootless grass in our political leaderships today?  There is no doubt that grass root leaders are considered as best representing the basic and direct political interest of the electorate.  Thus I also see many leaders do lobby such movement without sincerity (you knowlah, for personal gains).  Perhaps like some footballers, they may prefer an astroturf field in order to perform better, is that what our nation is heading to?

Ultimately, although grass roots movements are at the local level, the community whom give their time to support the local party, will eventually benefits the national party but what if the national leaders are fakers?  How far can one achieve then?

Be a Brand or Be Damned

22 06 2008

Last Friday, during the White Coffee Talk session, Dr.Koh’s rephrased about the rebranding exercise is about voicing the party’s ideology of advocating a Malaysian solution to rebuild, rebrand and re-empower the party at all levels to effectively serve and represent all Malaysians; and to win the people’s hearts and mind to regain their support.

So it is not the brand per se or about the logo or the name of the party.  The way I look at it is they or the leaders that engage in a clear identity that speaks of who they are and what they stand for, must have the ability to craft a brand for themselves.  A brand persona that can magnetise the power of people is all political leaders must aspire to.  Politicians must have a clear brand vision that will help them simplify for a mass movement what they stood for.

Those of us in this field can in a way recognise LGE or AI for their great branding for once being in jail and are now popularly accepted by the urbanites.  A true brand fighter can move mountains.  Miracles can happen.  This, after all, is why we are called magic makers.  Thus as for me, I need to understand the power of branding in every aspects of my life, otherwise be perceived as colourless and bland.  It is not a mere dressing up for Gerakan, it is now a matter of survival.  The truth is: be a brand or be damned!

Pakatan Rakyat, multi-racial?

21 06 2008

PAS emphasizes Islamic state & DAP wants a secular state?  This issue seems to be never-ending. The parties have become embroiled in yet another argument over the issue, confirming the sceptics’ belief that the coalition is of convenience, formed as afterthought of 12GE.  PR alliance is not formalised or registered as a coalition party yet.  PKR or to be more specific Anwar has been very shrewd and wise not to interfere whenever the issue is raised.  They (PAS, DAP & PKR) failed in 2001 to work together under Barisan Alternatif (BA), what makes us think they are genuinely formed this time to serve the nation effectively and beneficially.  Pergilah!

Uh, Public Transport?

20 06 2008

A female friend recently commented that she wanted very much to utilise the available public transport such as LRT and Rapid buses in order not to use her car, to save petrol.  Unfortunately the third day experience frightens her off.  The bus she took from Sri Petaling was full of Indonesians and Burmese that particular morning.  All eyes on her the moment she aboarded.  She felt very insecure.  Same went with the LRT where she encountered an even worse incident, handbag-snatcher, luckily she’s not the victim.  None of the station has a police beat.  Another friend drove his car to park at the nearby car park before trying the LRT for the first time to work.  Upon return, someone smashed the windscreen, he lost his smart tag and stereo.  So to them it is not only about convenience but safety…

Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad tried the public transport for 2 days. His verdict? “It’s not so convenient since there is no bus connection from my house to KL Sentral to take the ERL to Putrajaya. My wife has to send me to KL Sentral and my driver picks me up in Putrajaya. He will be bringing the matter up in the Cabinet today. Like Shahrir, many of us want to be a frequent user of ERL, LRT, buses etc but the location, security and facilities were very discouraging.  Why can’t we imitate HK or Singapore in this regards?  Malaysia too big?  Start around FT or Klang Valley, it is the people and the environment not the system.

Change With the Changing Times

19 06 2008

Since the last 102 days (12GE), our country has been dubbed the age of uncertainty and there is little doubt that many of the old certainties about relationship, work, finances, culture, politics and quality of life have been pushed aside.  With such economical and political changes come stress, insecurity and anxiety.  People are going through a whole range of emotions from shock to denial to anger to retreat.

It is significant time of revaluation for we Malaysians, be it a businessman, a politician, a professional, an employee or a retiree.  The traditional supports are falling apart.  Society, work and families are no longer stable and this has caused people to look inwards for answer.  Is it because we are afraid of having to come out of our comfort zone?  Are we blaming the government or the people around us?  Why not take a closer look at your ownself?

When people are under stress and worried, they tend to retreat into their own world.  They are not willing to work together as a team because of the feeling of insecurity.  We need to embrace change to survive now regardless of what happen or who is going to be our next PM or boss.  Recognition of one’s patterns of thinking, feeling, behaviour and interaction with others, will bring change.  When I know what I am doing and why, then I can change my thoughts.  Preservation is no more an option thus we cannot hang on to old values and traditions.  As for me, I will observe and see what is going on in every aspects of my life in order to initiate change in a constructive manner, as too many mistakes were made in the past.

It is man’s nature to protest against change, but when we are tactful and the aim is clear, change is possible.

Soaring Petrol Prices

19 06 2008

Questions to ponder (globally and locally):

1.     Do you think that big oil profits are simply a matter of supply and demand?

2.     Are the oil companies involved in pricing collusion or price gouging?

3.     Should a cap be placed on oil profits, either as a percentage or a dollar value?

4.     Which alternative fuels present the best chance of migrating us away from our dependence on oil?

5.     Will oil prices continue to rise?

6.     How high will oil prices reach in the next five years?

7.     Will the government increase another 78 sen next year?

8.     What alternate fuel sources are currently available to the average family?

9.     Is it true that Anwar can reduce the price back to square one if he is the PM?

10.    Whatever the next budget or plan to be introduced, can it actually reduce the burden of ordinary folks?

Judicial Reforms

18 06 2008

“The reforms are not only on setting up of the Judicial Appointments Commission, restoring judicial powers or even making ex-gratia payments” said Minister Zaid Ibrahim yesterday.  Those reforms listed as being people-friendly are nothing new.  Matters such as prevention of postponement, mediation, pleas bargaining, pre-trial conference and issue of bail have been repeatedly considered and practiced in the legal fratenity, thus it is the attitude of both the judiciary and legal profession that is required to change.  There is nothing wrong with the current system, it is the way the related people exercising it.  Not only the judges need to sacrifice their lifestlye and mindset to a certain extent, they must accept that it is their passion and love for justice and law to become a judge before we talk about reform.  I totally agree with Zaid’s remarks that Judges must be receptive to the changes and it can only take place if there is accountability and transparency.

Most importantly is the judges must be independent (yah, yah everyone knows this, but the fact is they are not!).  The media has created sufficient awareness of the relevant situation such as Justice Ian Chin’s confession and Tun Salleh’s dismissal as well as the Lingam’s incident.  The royalty, government and its people must be convinced that the judges are free from any influence by those who wield power.  Otherwise they cannot be trusted to decide whether or not the power is being abused or misused.  They must must not be diverted from their duty by any extraneous influences; not by hope of reward nor by the fear of penalities/dismissal.  It is the sure knowledge of this that gives the people their confidence in their judges.  Procedural reforms notwithstanding, there is a need for a substantive move forward that will ensure the primacy of justice in the fullest sense, not in a truncated form doing injustice to due process.  Only time will tell whether the promises of such judicial reform is proposed by self-serving forces of justice and equality or political purpose.

PM: “Relax, I know what I am doing…”

18 06 2008

Undoubtedly Pak Lah’s leadership within UMNO as well as his reform agenda has been dealt with a significant set back.  His previous aims of curbing corruption, encouraging hardworks, competing in global arena etc was all down the drain, clearly proven by the people’s vote.  For many of us and the Opposition, saved for the financial windfalls that have lined the pockets of some, what has the PM achieved that would bring a solid improvement to Malaysia?  Does Pak Lah hoenstly think that his words will fall in receptive ears while the political leadership increases in its display of contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law?  It is time for him to break his own judgment and shift the priority at this delicate moment, otherwise he may end up in catastrophe.

Yes, we have made some remarkable progress but there are enough signs that we are reverting to the social ill.  A friend of the ‘underworld’ recently shared about the kind and system of ‘money power’ in their orthodox corrupted world of Malaysia (or perhaps in JB only) is really shocking.  There is no reason for me not to believe in him as he can correctly points out who are the people in the Cabinet, authorities and relevant bodies are involved.  We had and have accustomed to regard such a social ill as the way of life, particularly among the Chinese community.  If Pak Lah does not seriously consider reforming and convincing the people that he is doing something substantive (even with Najib taking over, if he can make it), the PM is really digging his own grave.

P/S:  I wonder how true that SAPP will be hopping over and to table a motion of no confidence against the PM this Monday.

5.28pm  Yes it’s confirm that SAPP intends to table the vote (but not leaving BN yet) but can they do it by this Monday?  This should be the first time in the 50 years history of Malaysian politics, when an incumbent PM faces a vote of no-confidence in Parliament.  The best part is the motion comes from a component party of the BN, not one of the Opposition parties.

Nevertheless, as Nazri correctly pointed out that under the Standing Orders, the first 27 (1) provided for a motion to be tabled by any member on any specific subject but the member must give a 14-day notice. Even if this motion is accepted by the Speaker, it will only be debated when the government’s daily business in the House is concluded.  The second provision is 18 (1), when the House debates a motion by any member for an hour if it is specific, of public interest and has to be done immediately as it is deemed urgent. The speaker can either accept or reject it in his office or in the chamber. The House will debate the motion for an hour with both sides getting equal time. There will be no vote.  Unlike 27 (1) where a 14 days notice is needed, 18 (1) only needs a 48-hour notice or two clear working days, meaning that the SAPP or whoever is planning to table the motion must submit their motion to the Dewan Rakyat speaker by tomorrow.  So did Datuk Yong influenced by Anwar?

As for Pak Lah, in a press conference, he commented that the reason why Datuk Yong is taking such action is because he fails to satisfy Yong’s greed.  Possible?  Why not?  Or should I look into the other side of the coin whereby Sabah has been treated as persona non grata until the recent GE due to the majority votes to BN.  Would Pak Lah compromises and satisfies Yong’s request?  RM200 million?  Some say it would be much cheaper to purchase a gun.

Out of curiousity, what would be Gerakan’s stand if Pak Lah is no more the PM or worst if BN is no more the ruling government?  Did anyone in Gerakan plan a paradigm for the interest of the party?  Independent?  Join PR?

Anwar the PM-to-be?

17 06 2008

Eh wak…can he be trusted? Recently Anwar announced again: “We are getting nearer to Putrajaya”. Is it true that several MCA leaders from Penang are hopping over? What if all these and previous radical claims are false? How would the people see him then? Wouldn’t that will also dampens the enthusiasm of PKR supporters? Why is he taking such a political risk that will cost his credibility?

Unbelievable!

16 06 2008

Never Say Die!  That was the utmost spirit of the Turkish players this morning in the Euro 2008.  With 15 minutes left to the final whistle, they will be out to advance in the tournament.  The Czech led by 2-0, again hits the post, almost nailing the game.  It was pouring, the fans were disappointed, but they did not give up.  They run to their last breath, tackles and attacked vociferously.  I just can’t believe it, in an extraordinary climax, the Turkish scored back 3 goals and won the game!!!  (I jokingly said in one of my previous post that Turkey may win the Cup, it seems possible now!)

In life, if one refuses to give up and fight tirelessly to achieve whatever he wants, there is no reason why he can’t make it.  On the other hand, one should never be too contented and over-confident just like the Czechs as you’ll never what is going to happen next.

What does M wants?

16 06 2008

Is Abdullah Badawi that despicable?  Why is he going all out to attack his self-picked successor?  From the day M created his blogsite and departure from Umno, he has not been slowing down criticising the PM whenever and wherever he can.  At the age of 83, I salute his energy but he is acting unwisely.  The way I look at it, not only that the Opposition wants to see Umno falls but also M himself.  Apparently it looks like all forces are teaming up to bring Abdullah down!  I’m surprised M mentioned recently that the non-Malays should stop questioning Malays’ rights, non-Malays must realised and look into the history that they are privileged to be accepted in this country.  Wow!  This is unacceptable!  We are in the 21st century, and M is bringing us back!  Most Chinese/Indians are born, bred and will die in Malaysia.  Their roots are in this beauiful land called Malaysia.  M promoted Bangsa Malaysia, fostered a democratic and developed nation.  Now what is he trying to prove?  Or is he really irrelevant that we should ignore his calling by all means?

AI has a Godfather?

16 06 2008

Globally he is widely accepted as one of the liberal Muslim leader, in fact he is the most recognised Malaysian leader in history, particularly to USA, why?

Critical Evaluation

15 06 2008

Repeatedly people have been telling me that it is a matter of time before BN/UMNO sinks.  One of the paramount concern in our society today is how effective is the ruling party in implementing the best policies to enhance the welfare of everyone.  When the policies that are being pursued by the government in power, in one’s evaluation, most likely to bring about an undesirable consequence, then that person has the right to be unsatisfied and complain.  Obviously one example is the recent fuel hike.

Pak Lah’s recent announcement about Najib’s takeover may not be a convincing act as he cannot expect us to take in all the elegant silence and simply wait patiently for the day of his successor.  Even if he resigns tomorrow, would the rakyat accept the new leaderships.  Many have perceived BN politics as unhealthy and a regression as after decades of leading the coalition/country, they have not managed to steer it away from the racial politics and corruption.  Are they incorrigible?  Can the rakyat accept the new generations of the BN leadership?  (do not forget Samy is still there and the negative image of KJ and Najib) or would this controversy reaches the end once PR in control?

Who is Anwar?

13 06 2008

Is Anwar Ibrahim a good leader?  Can he be entrusted to become the next PM?  Where did he got all the moneys during the recent 12th General Election? View the following clip:

“Never mindlah about Anwar’s credibility…

13 06 2008

… so long as BN is ousted.  Considering the current situation, Anwar seems to be the best choice.”

A lot of people out there have perceived such an idea as they want to see a reform and beginning of a new Malaysia.  Time and time again Anwar emphasizes that the 16/9 deadline of defection to proceed as planned.  (and I have again and again rebutting the same).  Is it a political gimmick or a reality to be?  Could it be that Anwar is manipulating his political foes to cause a mess within the BN and UMNO particularly those from Sabah & Sarawak?  Check out the oppositions’ websites and blogs, many have begin to believe that Anwar is capable of taking over the government now.

“According to our timetable it is still on. Now it is more attractive after the price hike,” Anwar said at a press conference after a meeting with members of his Keadilan party’s supreme council.  “In the light of the political and economical uncertainties led by the government, we have seen clearly more interest and support for Pakatan Rakyat and this applies even to members of parliament.”

“There is absolutely no reason… for them to remain and support the leadership that has failed the nation.”

The crucial question:  can PR govern the country?  Are they fit enough to become the government of the day?  As Malaysians, I urge all of us to consider the following as a self-interrogation:

>  Yes, BN lost and weakened in some ways after the election but PR has not actually win yet.  Citizens of all races voted for the Opposition simply because to prove their disgruntleness against BN leaders and to prevent a 2/3 majority.  Thus it did not means that they are supporting PKR, PAS and DAP agendas.  In fact mostly if not all were surprised with the results that evening.

>  PR is a coalition by convenience, a loose one.  Anwar was obliged to form PR as a political reality considering the mixed government in Penang, Perak and Selangor.  This is affirmed by previous DAP withdrawal from Barisan Alternatif (BA) as they cannot accept the idea of an Islamic state pursued by PAS.

>  PKR and DAP have no experience in running their respective state affairs.  Many of their MPs and Aduns could not believe the windfall until today.  Put any Tom, Dick and Harry (bloggers, IT man, cameraman and street protester!), they’ll be elected wakil rakyat.  How efficient are they now?  (do not be deceived from the newspaper).  Many do not even dare to utter a word in Parliament, not to mention forgetting their question list.  Oklah give them some time, they are still green… (then I might as well elect someone from the university, pure and clean).

>  Why would those BN leaders ‘jump ship’?  What sort of promises made by Anwar?

>  Currently Anwar is in no position to hold the PM post, can he make it before 16/9?  Or shall we have Azizah as the first woman to become a PM, creating 2 historical events at the same time.

>  Do we want to change the government just because of the recent fuel hike?  Although Anwar promises to reduce the same if he is the PM, how sustainable would that be?  What make us think that he who failed previously as DPM and Finance Minister is different this time?

>  Can Malaysia becomes a freer and more democratic country under PR?  Relate this question to the current condition, do we want to take a risk?  Is it worth the gamble?  Too much is at stake: national unity, competitiveness of our economy, as well as what exactly is Anwar’s intention.

As for myself, I am in favor of some form of affirmative action and real reform within the BN particularly to get rid of all those bad apples instead of taking the above risk.  If the BN  leaders do not change their mindset soon, I might as well place my bet on Turkey to win the Euro 2008!

Slogan of banners in today’s massive fuel-hike protest at Jalan Raja/KLCC: ‘BN turun, Minyak turun’ ? (ever think of BN turun, Rakyat turn, Negara pun turun?)

Euro ‘08, so far so good…

11 06 2008

From venomous volleys (Ibrahimovic!) to ferocious free kicks and mesmerising moves to clever chips, the Euro 2008 has been blessed with some sublime goals.  Tonight it will be the starting of the second round matches with Portugal taking on Czech.  Yesterday’s match between Spain and Russia was the best so far whereas the French game was the worst.  Regular late nights but worth the fun.  Imagine what would our life be without music (and, to me, football) !  Ole-ole-ole!

‘Gerakan Still Politically Relevant’

11 06 2008

“We are non-racial in our policy and approach which are based on human rights and liberal democratic principles . We must struggle in our fight for a fair and just society. We have to protect the rights of every racial group not because of their racial background but because of their fundamental rights as human beings who must be accorded the rights stipulated in the Federal Constitution.”

Speaking to theSun reporters two days ago, Gerakan VP, Datuk Chang Ko Youn affirms that the party is and remain relevant after the 12GE.  Positively, Chang is doing a good job in expressing such views publicly as many people and even the party’s members have been pondering the relevancy of Gerakan today.  If the party is irrelevant, why is it so many people (even the political leaders) are so concerned?

?????#$@@%^&*)*$^<MT>#@&**@%^?@?????  what an insult ! ^^^

Unfortunately the common people and laymen are skeptical and perceived the party as being nailed and irrelevant, and is digging their own grave so long as they remain in BN.  Many have suggested Gerakan to leave BN or be a NGO instead.  In my humble opinion, yes they are relevant, one must not view the situation simply because of being in BN or the abused idea of ‘political-beggar’ and submission of ‘ketuanan Melayu’ but rather the existence of the highest quality of the party and its people.  We shall look into a larger picture as a whole and consider the complexity of our people in Malaysia.

To my mind, Gerakan needs to become a real political party for the people.  Gerakan must not remain volatile and tame in BN.  They require more boldness and confidence in creating a people-orientated system.  The party’s coming election will be a great platform to reform appropriately and start bearing fruits.

Is A.I. for real?

11 06 2008

D-Day on 16 September, this will be the historical day for Malaysia, a change of Government - AI to be the new PM.  Is he for real?  AI has been very active in promoting his agendas and ideas recently by holding conference, talks and forums.  In an event held at Gombak-Ampang-Setiawangsa-Wangsa Maju, thousand of supporters attended his talk.  Indeed no one would dispute that he speaks well with his red batik shirt on.  That evening he was not only a great entertainer but also a joker and pathetic politician.  Basically the message he conveyed was condemning UMNO, persuading BN’s people/supporters to leave and of course criticised vehemently about the fuel hike.  Many were touched by his speech not so much of the truth but the way he coloured it.  The word protection of  ’Melayu’ and ‘Islam’ was emphasized many times but he was quick and witty enough to cover up with pleasing statements to the non-Malays.

A brief background for those who fell in love with his story that night.  During his young days, AI was the President of Persatuan Kebangsaan Pelajar Melayu Malaysia.  He also sat in the committee of Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia.  In fact he read and graduated in Islamic Studies.  When he was the Education Minister, he introduced numerous pro-Malay policies in the national school curriculum.  Now he claims that he will fight for all races and to abolish NEP once he becomes the PM.  He once criticised the agendas of Pas and Dap countlessly and now he joined them in conveniently.  Yes, we are mature to judge and decide what is best for the nation, think about it.  Or shall we see what he has to say on 16/9?

We can make a difference

10 06 2008

Whether you are an enterpreneur, an employee, a civil servant, students, retirees, politicians, professionals, a comfortable millionaire or jobless, the post-March 8 resulted us to demand and deserve a re-democratization process which must uphold the core values of transparency, justice, freedom, information access, empowerment, low-crime rate and a corruption-free society.  Yes, we Malaysians regardless of our backgrounds or status have the ability to effect changes in public life.  But the fact remains that many of us did not vote or even bother to contribute except for making noises all around.  As citizens, we can demand that both BN and PR to make a commitment and demonstrate their political will to place reforms towards our rights and freedom in their administrative and legislative agendas.  Of course there is always a proper avenue instead of running the risk of arrest by participating in demostration or acted foolishly.

After some serious observation and discussion, the truth is in our multi-racial nation, unity along racial lines is the major stumbling block to national integration, and hence national unity.  Corollary to that, a major realignment of political allegiance in accordance with one’s political ideology irrespective of race would be a great breakthrough in national integration and economic advancement at this stage of our history.  This democratic process works to the best interest of the populace, as it encourages the development of excellence all the way from the conceptualization of ideas, to the formulation of policies and finally to the implementation.  However, in a multi-racial nation, this ideal picture of a model of democracy will be shattered, if we (or they) practice racial politics through racial parties.  Worst still to those who could not be bothered at all, please do not complain or even talk about any national issues.

Needless do I need to elaborate on the current situation in UMNO, DAP, PAS or even PKR (please understand Anwar’s background for those who disagree).  Racialism and rational politics are incompatible.  As for UMNO and its BN coalition, they are still very relevant, it was a grotesque entanglement of money and intrigue, wrought by years of corruption that caused their downfall at least in the four states.  It is also not my intention here to comment on those irresponsible and sinful acts or about the petrol hike and inflation, or about the current administration of BN or PR or even the possibility of Anwar being the PM-in-waiting but to garner support from all (sounds too ambitious eh?) Malaysians to be a responsible and concern citizen.

So?       Take action: participate and contribute positively in political parties, NGOs and relevant association (ok lah including donation and charitable act).  Yes, we can make a difference regardless of who we are for the hope to enjoy good governance and quality of life.

Kungfu Panda’s Mentality

9 06 2008

This movie left an open question in my mind.  Many Malaysians have talents but little or no experience.  They have career interests but few clear goals.  They wanted to find work that would be both financially rewarding and personally fulfilling, but they didn’t know how.

Over the weekend, I spent some quality time with my kids at the cinema to watch ‘Kungfu Panda’.  The amusing  leading character, an irreverent Panda (named Po, if I remember correctly) inspired me to think about the following question:  What methods did the successful people use to understand their strengths and weaknesses, their likes and dislikes, and to discover their indentities?  How did they build on that self-knowledge to begin shaping their lives?  The usual saying goes of one is never too old to learn, my first curiosity is how leaders (of all sorts) figured out what they wanted to do with their lives in the first place.  Where did they start?  For Po, as he decided to be a fighter for the people, he encounters all kinds of endurance, obstacle, self-doubts and struggles.  No one believes that this fat animal was capable of beating their greatest enemy, the white leopard, Tai Lung.  Even Po’s master (sifu) doubted until he discovered Po’s passion for food that gave him the martial art skills and passion which Po himself is not aware.  Po became a hero by learning to believe in himself, he can do anything.

Since young, I can’t help snickering at the abstract frameworks and buzzwords introduced by academic studies of success theory.  How exactly do we discover our destiny, find ourselves and to translate that knowledge of identity into fruitful work?

In addition, the movie also re-affirmed my long belief that the most important thing is to enjoy whatever we do/work in order to excel.  There are times when this curiosity seems silly and easy to say, other times when it troubles me, and still others when it makes me laugh with delight.

So in today’s fast-paced century, with mounting pressure from all directions and growing demands of time, unless one becomes tough-minded, courages and enthusiastic like Po, it is difficult to keep pace with tough times.  It is that power of self-belief…

Here We Go !

8 06 2008

Many have been waiting since the end of EPL.  The teams have prepared for the moment of truth. The waiting will be over in 10 minutes time.  This time I do not expect to see any new names creating an impact in the tournament.  Seasoned stars like Ronaldo, Torres, Ballack, Henry, Ibrahimovic, Luca Toni, Ribery and Nistelrooy will continue to shine.

In Asia, although the hot country England fails to qualify this time round, bettors/punters remain excited.  It is in the Chinese blood, generally to bet.   They love the thrill of telephoning, sticking to the live-score website, pager, watching the game and to win $.  In Malaysia as the authority is eyeing closely against this illegal activity (really can’t understand why dont they legalise it, Singapore, HK etc did it, why not us?  After all there’s already casino, 4Ds etc), it is still unlikely to curb that mood.  Above all, enjoy !

Basel, opening match to be held here.

Daulat Tuanku !

7 06 2008

Happy Birthday, Salutations & Congratulations His Majesty Yang Di-Pertuan Agong 13 Tuanku Mizan.  How come all the King’s birthday falls on 7 June every year, is it really his birthday?  Watched the live telecast of the official parade, Pak Lah and Tun Mahathir were some of the VIP guests, their faces were KNS!!

Also heartiest congratulations to those who receive the King’s award today such as Tun Lim Keng Yaik (Samy Velly tentu jealous!), Tun Abdul Hamid (CJ), Nicol Davis – Darjah Bakti, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy (it’s a deal?), Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim, Tan Sri Alauddin Mohd Sheriiff (CJM) and the rest.  Daulat Tuanku !

‘I believe I can fly…’

6 06 2008

aiyoh, how to make roti canai…

Enough of the fuel hike.  Stop grumbling, it is stressful and harmful to our health.  Take it as a challenge to work hard and earn more money.  Last night my wife suggested sending our kid to a private school and after much thought of my commitments:  loans, insurance, bills, expenditure etc, what the heck, just do it so long as it will provide a better and quality life to my family.  So do not retreat but make it possible.

It is a man’s nature to protest against change, but when are tactful, change will be welcomed.

p/s:  forget about the mass protest on July 12, behave dear Malaysians.

Oh My Switzerland…

6 06 2008

This year EURO 2008 co-hosts are Switzerland and Austria.  I am more fascinated with Swiss as it has been my childhood dream to visit there one day.  Tomorrow will be the kick-off, starts at 12.00 am, although my dream is unable to crystalise yet, at least I have the chance to view one of the greatest football competition (TV).  Matches are from stadiums around cities of Basel, Zurich, Bern and Geneve.  Flippped my new book entitles ‘501 Must-Visit Cities’, impressive sceneries and stunning architecture.  This country is frequently named as the nation with the best quality of life in the world.  Splendid!  Extraordinary!

Why is PM taking a political-risk?

5 06 2008

It is obvious that many ordinary citizens will not be happy about the hefty price tag.  He tried to redeem himself after the 12GE shocking results.  He knew a mistake was made by calling the GE wrongly, by ignoring the cyberworld and arrogance.  He knew the PR’s manisfesto and campaigning tactics of ‘BN = Barang Naik’ was one of the major factor that caused the swing.  Not forgetting there are also the threat by Anwar’s allegation of taking over the government by September and also his challenges in the coming UMNO’s election.  He can easily expects Anwar, Kit Siang, Tun M and many more to attack the hike AND WHY is he still making such a harsh decision yesterday?

Did the PM manage to convince the public by explaining the pros and cons of reviewing the subsidy.  Is it justifiable to comprehend the simplistic approach of giving rebates albeit the likelihood higher cost for other goods and services due to the petrol hike?  The mere fact that he pleaded the people not to demonstrate/protest about the hike proves he is well aware of the situation.  The Opposition in KL, Penang & Perak is ignoring the advice as they started protesting this morning.  The economic intellectuals cannot accept the fact of the 40% increase as they consider the government is trying to make people absorbing previous subsidies.  By selling 700,000 barrels of crude oil a day and buying 600,000 barrel of crude for domestic consumption, Petronas is still making a huge profit. est USD 15.5m a day x 365 x 3.25 RM/USD rate, that is RM 18.4 billion a year of profits. Or according to Tun M, Petronas produce 650,000 barrels where we consume 400,000 leaving 250,000 to be exported, which earns about RM27 billion a year! (overall RM70 billion).  Couple that with their profitable ventures in Middle East and Africa, why can’t he allows Petronas to absorb instead?  Or as many citicised, why not send them to an economic class?

Guan Eng responded: “The petrol increase is both economically inefficient and socially unjust”.  Come on that is a very wide remarks!  Prove and explain it in detail my dear CM!  Expectedly Anwar commented that the government is consistently wasting public funds.  He repeats PR and his contention to reduce oil price base on humanitarian economy.   Lah…taktik basi pulak!

Conversely, we Malaysians may be taking things for granted and has been long spoilt by all sort of subsidies.  The hike is inevitable due to the global trend, this is the fact not excuse!  The new scheme did plan to channel the subsidy for development projects and improvement of public transport.  As for Petronas earnings, do the people aware that billions of ringgits used from there to pay up Tun Mahathir’s potholes from his mega projects and leftovers?  The monies were also used for other developments, it is Pak Lah who does not voice it out firmly.  I think it is high time for the government to curb inflation in term of per capita income and improve the standard of living (as in Singapore and Hong Kong).  People need to cultivate an innovative and hardworking attitude, not just relying on the government and live a life of ‘kais pagi makan pagi, kais petang, makan petang’.  So it can be ‘a short term pain, but long term gain’ and perhaps the idea of imposing minimum wage is not a bad idea after all.  As elaborated above, do you really think that as a PM, he is so foolish to take such a risk just for the people to hate him?  Be neutral and think constructively.

Kit Siang and Anwar will of course make a big hoohah, political tactic just to show support or concern of the people particularly those who are less educated and susceptible to their words.  Think about it, is Pak Lah making the right move?

Errrr…brrr petrol hike!

5 06 2008

It’s time to sell this superbike…

P/S:  The government has decided to do away with the ban on the sale of fuel to foreign-registered vehicles up to 50 km inside the country from its borders with Thailand and Singapore.
The ban, which came into effect on Monday at the border with Thailand, is to be lifted Thursday and the ban to be imposed at the border with Singapore on June 9 will not come into force.  So to those who jumped up and down few days ago, especially Johoreans, PRs & Singaporeans, happy?

Incitement of Racism!

4 06 2008

What a ****!  Could you guys believe that such mindset still exists?  This is clearly seditious!!!

“Saya juga menyeru kepada semua mahasiswa Melayu supaya kita bersedia menghadapi sebarang kemungkinan yang akan berlaku memandangkan kebangkitan rakyat hari ini adalah bermula dari kaum bukan Melayu.  Jangan kita leka sehingga musuh di dalam selimut menikam kita.  Jangan disebabkan kita Malaysia jatuh ke tangan yang tidak sepatutnya”  !!!

The Head of Graduates of UM forwarded a letter to fellow graduates, advising them to protect Malaysia free from intrusion of alien races.  He urged that they must not allow other races to dominate the land as the non-Malays are irrelevant in this country.  Everyone has been talking about unity, true Malaysian or Bangsa Malaysia even Tun Mahathir posted a related subject recently and now we have such an idiot attempting to influence the negative.  Isn’t the above statement is many times worst than RP’s?

[Latest at 4.28pm - minyak akan naik 78 sen per litre effektif pukul 5.00?  Adui sakit dompet!]

Talk of the town since 6.00pm, let me count…about 20 people smsed and called me pertaining to the hike issue.  At about 7pm as I drove by Old Klang Road and OUG, all petrol stations were in long queue, Mobil shut its business!  Just horrendous!

Ok the hike takes effect after midnight.  PM said it was a difficult decision, nevertheless there will be a rebate RM625 cash for vehicles below 2000cc.  Many complained of the drastic rise, wrong timing and worst of all cursed Umno government.  Some even told me that Umno is digging their own grave and if Gerakan, MCA and MIC do not get out of BN, they are also doomed.  A sundry shop owner commented:  “Why can’t they cut profit from Petronas?  We are oil producer country!”  A bank officer said:  “Bad corporate governance!”  Too many feedbacks and nasty remarks received within an hour, whooosh…I wonder what will be the effect.

Latest:  more bad news to consumer, the electrical tariff will be increased too!

EURO 2008!

4 06 2008

All 16 competing nations at EURO 2008 have submitted their finalised 23-man squad lists to UEFA.  Countdown begins for me since last week.  This time the tounament may be quite unusual with the absence of England.  There are just 4 days to go until kick-off and the countdown begins in earnest now that all 368 competing players have been named. Co-hosts Switzerland get the tournament under way against the Czech Republic in Basel on 7 June (12 am 8/6 : Malaysian time), before fellow co-hosts Austria begin their Group B campaign the following day in Vienna.  Subsequently most of the daily matches start at 12.00 am and 2.45 am respectively.  Being a hardcore football fan, I anticipated that most 12 am matches will not be missed (perhaps the same goes to David, Liang and Noel).  Whatever it is, enjoy!

Unrelated:

Barrack Obama declared victory over Clinton as the Democratic presidential nominee?  7.12pm:  Yes, he seals it!
