Over the weekend I was at Kampung Bahagia, an isolated village that required 40 minutes boat ride from Kuala Krai which is a small town in Kelantan. Personally I enjoyed the stay with a sense of appreciating my life in the city. The closeness to the nature of forest and simplicity of its people livelihood was an interesting exposure. Although there was no newspaper, mobile-phone coverage and tv, news about Teng and Huan were informed, thanks to the internet.

A tussle between decency and gungho, a state chairman against an elected national vice-president. Would the public interested to know what transpired in the recent Gerakan’s affair? Yes and no. It started due to the appointment of coordinators (‘penyelaras’) in Penang (but some say since Teng took over the state chief). Previously again hours were squandered in a meeting with everyone listening and yawning over the their argument. It may not be a big deal after all, due to the party’s performance since 308. Nonetheless, it is perceived those who are selected would likely be the candidate of that constituency in the next election. It is the same old thing about position and power in any political parties.
A comrade asked: what has Teng achieves so far in Penang? For that it was also him and several quarters of the senior members who caused the clean-sweep. We can’t just blame everything on UMNO as if that is the benchmark of the swing. If one is really good and has been working hard to serve and gain support in his area, the voters are not blind. Some say it is time for the members and people to see that indeed there is a need to change certain leaderships of the party. The senior members need to realise that their time may be short lived and must learn to let go – this is what encourage the youth members.
Some still consider Huan as part of the youth, the VP will gain supports as he had done nothing wrong except for provoking Teng. Huan’s claim that he may leave the party along with 100 branches is a talking point too. Why 3 weeks? The Pemuda wants to investigate the true voice of the grassroots particularly among the youths. The public may perceives Gerakan is actively trying to revamp the party – a sign of democracy. On the other hand, the crucial question is whether what Huan did has a selfish agenda to promote his own cause, after all there had been implied records to prove his intention. Positively should the CWC decided to chop him off this time to prevent a floodgate or any similar threat, it would be a good move with the general election is still about 3 years to go. Actually would it makes any difference? What if that cause is for the benefit of the party as a whole?
Many have the answer of who is the President supporting. As for now whether a warning or a show cause is issued, we can expect some dramatic events in the coming weeks.
Such internal squabbling may even made it harder for Gerakan to rebuild itself (especially in Penang). Locals or DAP may be laughing over the matter with banner of criticism displayed openly. Would Teng leads Penang Gerakan to ‘Holland’ (message as in the banner) or is Huan doing it for selfish agendas? Perhaps I should rule out the issue of self-interest, after all it is part and parcel of the game. Above all, the party must realise Gerakan will have to revamp its tarnished reputation and cannot operate in its own space, ignoring the public perception.

Gerakan is becoming like umno and mca…very sad.
COnfirmlah, Gerakan is a Chinese party, the non-Chinese are merely a showcase. Why Koh tsu koon didnt comment about the two fights? Oh ya very busy, no time for the party. Keep fighting until your doomed day comes!
By the way I feel Huan is wrong in creating such attention. If he really has such strong support, prove it in the next party election.
Gerakan seriously need to be active not only in Penang but other states. Grassroot support and serving the people wholeheartedly is a definite answer. To me both are arse holes because none of them seems to commit and put the party first.
Let Teng Hock Nam lead the Wanita!!!
Press statement released by Sec-Gen Teng Chang Yeow today:
“The Central Working Committee (CWC) of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia met on the evening of 31 May 2009 to discuss the intended resignation of Huan Cheng Guan, the Party’s Vice President, as reported in the newspapers.
As of the evening of the CWC meeting, the Party HQ has yet to receive his notification of resignation. His intention to resign was made known through statements he made in the media. The Party’s Constitution required “a member who wishes to resign from the Party shall give 30 days’ notice in writing to his Branch Secretary and a copy to the CWC through the Secretary General….”.
While respecting Huan’s rights to express his views, the CWC viewed his recent media statements, particularly those ridiculing the Party in the vernacular press as having gone overboard and had badly tarnished the party’s image. His action had caused dissension and division in the Party, which is unacceptable to the CWC.
As such, the CWC had decided that disciplinary action be instituted against him, in accordance to the provisions of the Party’s Constitution. A show cause letter will be issued to him, which he has to reply within 14 days.
The CWC also issued reminders to all members to observe strict party discipline and protect the image of the party at all times. All disagreement or criticisms should be conveyed through proper party channel available and not through the media.”
Hi Mr Andy,
What “His action had caused dissension and division in the Party”? There has been such practice in Gerakan all this while, isn’t it? If Huan wants to go, let it be, after all Gerakan should not has a leader struggling for himself instead of the party.
In MCA ada Chua Soi Leck, in MIC ada that old veteran – name forgotten, in PPP ada Murugiah now in Gerakan ada Huan Cheng Guan; BN Boleh !
O ya missed out: in UMNO ada many warlords who can anytime cause trouble if no $ !!
It seems that Gerakan only has either sissy and gangster-styled leaderships, both will lead the party not only to holland but another universe.
You guys never learn, what is required is a united party fighting for survival instead of killing each other in the family. This duo crisis is clearly unhealthy and prove selfishness of each leaders. The is a need of balance, divide and rule between the main body, youth and wanita wings, to foster cooperation and the spirit to fight for the party. I believe there are many capable and committed members to rejuvenate and revamp the party to prepare for the next election. The old or selfish ones must go!
Agree, troublemaker and spy (to umno) in the party must go!
There is no turning point at this stage now, even if Huan does not leave, the relationships between them or with others are artificial, no sense of unity anymore. So Huan must go either leaving himself or by the party. It will be problematic if the party sacks him. Gerakan cannot afford to have such crisis again, Koh Tsu Koon must be decisive and firm from now onwards. Everyone must act in the interest of the party now, otherwise will be doomed and no point crying over spilt milk then.
A question of unity versus ability to change. Huan can just gives in and remain VP, hoping that the old folks will change in the future although it is very unlikely. Huan will not carry Koh and gangs’ balls, that makes him unpopular in the CC. On the other hand, if Huan really has the support, his people can stand out strongly now, no need to join PR, after all he may not be wanted in there too. His integrity is in doubt plus he never has the criteria of an outstanding leader. Many Penangites could not bother at all as they see Gerakan is hopeless now. Wake up.
Huan wont leavelah, he cant survive at the opposition who r worst ruffians than him.
What’s the latest about yr VP?
back to square one, cheap political publicity!!!! Shame on you guys!!
